March 22, 2009 - Van celebrated some success and some letdown at the Cajun SportsNationals. Van and Stella took part in time trials on Friday and got some good data for the "box".

Saturday morning Van won his first round of the "Race within a race" which took place in the time trials in each class. Each class was eligible to win $1000 for winning all their rounds of time trials. When he got in line for the 2nd round, his starter locked up and they had to tow the car back to the pits.

Van and crew worked into the night to change the starter, the flywheel, which had broken some teeth, and one of their batteries. Low battery voltage turned out to be the cause of the original starter problem.

Sunday morning they ran 1st round of Super Street and won with a 10.907 @ 147 MPH. The second round was lost by only .003 (10.897 @ 147 MPH), when his sixty-foot time improved a little more than the amount that he broke out.

All in all it was a good weekend. When they left for home there was nothing to work on, the car was in good shape, and they solved their weather station problems, and everyone had a good time. The weather was perfect for racing. Thank God! Sunday Photos

March 18, 2009 - Van tested Sunday at State Capitol Raceway and got in two passes before the rains came. Van and family will be at No Problem Raceway tomorrow for the Jegs Cajun SportsNationals. He will be competing in Super Street class.

March 12, 2009 - Van will be competing in the bracket event at No Problem Raceway on this coming Sat. He will also be testing this coming weekend at State Capitol Raceway on Sunday.

Van needs seat time to get his throttle stop calibrated for the upcoming Jegs Cajun Sports Nationals at NPRP. Van will compete in Super Street Class.

Van will be celebrating his BIG Six-O birthday on Sat. while at NPRP. It would be a great present to win this Sat. Congratulations Van!

March1, 2009 -Van was at State Capitol Raceway tuning his Chevelle for Super Street racing, NHRA style. Van, Stella and Chandra along with his friend Nick were tending to the car.

Van got off to a rough start, having to look for fuel. Several Baton Rouge area racers came to the rescue with enough fuel to complete the testing session. Stella and Chandra are in charge of the weather station, calculations and general log keeping. They also enter all data in the timers to set the throttle stop. Van made several runs. The first pass was way off the mark, but subsequent runs netted 10. 92 and 10.89 @ approximately 150 MPH. Van then let it all hang out and ran a 8.77 @ 150.6 MPH. Houston Hawkins come out to help with the later runs. Van PHOTOS

Feb. 2, 2009 - After a year of thrashing engine, transmission and converter combinations, Zubie Racing, LLC and Mr.Van Johnson are back on track!

The engine has been completely updated, assembled, dyno tested and installed. A new engine machine shop was found and Van assembled the engine himself. The new engine has a vacuum pump and many other innovations that the original engine did not have (I have seen the dyno sheets, but the information is confidential).

Van also built his new powerglide transmission, after removing the 400 transmission that he had run since the car was built. He has chosen to go with a spragless converter after talking to several transmission vendors and technical persons.

The first trip to the track for the new engine/trans combination was Jan. 31, 2009 at No Problem Raceway Park. Off the trailer was the best run of the day with a, "Drum roll please", 8.764 @150 MPH, with a 1.253 sixty foot time!

Van did not know that he had run that quick and his crew was the first to let him know when he got back to the pits! Van reported that the car drove straight and felt smooth. We know the car will go quicker because the engine was hitting the rev. limiter at the 1000 ft. mark on the track. Van thinks the chip (7400) needs to be changed. One other run was made with similar results. After that run he entered the 1/8 mile event taking place at the track.

Van was the top qualifier in the Pro-Tree, 5.50 Index Class. Van ran consistent 5.55 times, winning two rounds before finishing in the Runner-Up spot to Mr. Boo Boo, who won the money. Congratulations to Van!

If you see an awesome looking silver & black 1969 Chevelle at the track, beware, that's Zubie Racing, LLC!
